How to Import Your Letterboxd and IMDb Watch History in Two Minutes

Your film history belongs to you. Whether you have logged 50 films or 2,000, here is how to bring your Letterboxd zip or IMDb CSV straight into moviemates.social without losing your watch dates or star ratings.

By Kim Routley (Founder, moviemates.social) · Updated · 4 min read

In short: Key takeaways

  • moviemates.social accepts the standard Letterboxd account export `.zip` file as well as individual `.csv` files (`ratings.csv`, `watched.csv`, `diary.csv`).
  • IMDb ratings and watchlists import directly from IMDb's exported `.csv` file.
  • Original watch dates are preserved for your Monthly and Yearly Wrapped stories; films without a known date are safely marked as watched without fake 1970 timestamps.
  • Imported star scores stay intact while letting you upgrade any favourite film to a full 10-craft rating whenever you feel like it.
What gets imported from Letterboxd and IMDb
Source File What It Brings Across How Movie Mates Uses It
Letterboxd export (.zip) Ratings, Diary dates, Watched films, and Reviews Populates My Films, Insights, and Wrapped stories immediately
Letterboxd ratings.csv / watched.csv Star ratings (0.5 to 5 stars) and logged titles Preserves your star rating and filters seen films out of 'What Should I Watch?'
IMDb ratings export (.csv) 1 to 10 scores, IMDb IDs, and rating dates Matches exact films via TMDb/IMDb IDs and maps scores cleanly

Step 1: Export your data from Letterboxd or IMDb

On Letterboxd, open Settings in your browser, go to the Import & Export tab, and click Export Your Data. Letterboxd will download a single zip file containing your diary, ratings, and watched list.

On IMDb, open Your Ratings or Your Watchlist, click the three-dot menu or Export button at the top of the page, and download the CSV file to your phone or computer.

Step 2: Drop the file into moviemates.social

Open moviemates.social, head to your Account tab, and tap Import History. Select your Letterboxd zip (or CSV) or your IMDb CSV file. Movie Mates matches every film against the catalogue, pulls in official posters and runtime data, and updates your profile in the background.

Step 3: Unlock Insights, Wrapped, and smarter recommendations

The moment your history finishes importing, three things happen immediately: your Insights tab lights up with your top genres, decades, directors, and actors; your Yearly and Monthly Wrapped stories are ready to play; and What Should I Watch? knows every film you have already seen so it only recommends fresh picks for you and your squad.

Frequently asked questions

Will importing my Letterboxd zip overwrite ratings I already made on Movie Mates?

No. Any craft-by-craft rating you have already written on moviemates.social is protected and will never be overwritten by an imported CSV or zip file.

What happens if a film in my Letterboxd export does not have a watch date?

Films from watched.csv that do not have a specific diary date are marked as watched in your library without inventing a fake date, so your timeline and Wrapped calendar stay accurate.

Can I still write a full 10-craft rating on an imported movie later?

Yes. Imported films show your original star rating, and you can tap Rate on any of them at any time to score the 10 crafts and generate an Aurora score out of 100.
