In short: Key takeaways
- IMAX (Melbourne Museum and IMAX Sydney at Darling Harbour) offers dual-laser projection, expanded aspect ratios on select blockbusters, and the largest screens in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Hoyts Xtremescreen and Event / Village Vmax pair oversized wall-to-wall screens with Dolby Atmos surround sound and recliner seating at suburban multiplexes.
- When you rate a film on moviemates.social, scoring Cinematography, Soundtrack, and Special Effects lets you record whether the big-screen format delivered.
- MM Wallet tags your saved ticket stubs with the screen format (such as IMAX, Xtremescreen, Vmax, D-BOX, or Gold Class) so your cinema history remembers the exact experience.
| Format | Where You Find It | Key Technical Edge | Best Genres for the Upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMAX (1.43:1 / Dual Laser) | IMAX Melbourne (Carlton) & IMAX Sydney (Darling Harbour) | Expanded vertical aspect ratio & massive scale | Shot-for-IMAX sci-fi, epics, and Christopher Nolan or Denis Villeneuve films |
| Hoyts Xtremescreen | Major Hoyts locations Australia-wide | Big screen + Dolby Atmos sound + standard Hoyts recliners | Action blockbusters, horror, and musicals |
| Event & Village Vmax | Event and Village multiplexes | Large-format screen with Daybed and recliner seating options | Big Friday night crowd-pleasers with mates |
| Gold Class / Lux | Village, Event, Hoyts | In-seat dining and lounge armchairs in a boutique auditorium | Long dramas and date nights |
When to pay for IMAX vs a suburban Vmax or Xtremescreen
If a film was actually shot with IMAX cameras or mixed specifically for expanded aspect ratios, making the trip into IMAX Melbourne at Carlton Gardens or IMAX Sydney at Darling Harbour is a genuine event. For standard 2.39:1 wide-release blockbusters, a local Vmax or Xtremescreen with Dolby Atmos gives you booming sound and a huge picture right near home.
Preserving format badges on your ticket stubs
When you scan or add a ticket into MM Wallet on moviemates.social, your keepsake stub preserves the format badge (like Xtremescreen, D-BOX, IMAX, or Vmax) alongside your seat number and cinema location.
