In short: Key takeaways
- Movie Mates is one of the only film apps with a dedicated Prosthetics / Hair & Make-up slider, making it built for body horror and creature features.
- Use Enjoyment, Soundtrack, and Cringe Factor to distinguish tense atmospheric horror from loud Friday-night crowd-pleasers.
- Run a Group Decision poll before the night so mates who hate slow-burn dread can vote for a fast-paced monster or slasher film.
- Filter by Shudder, Stan, Netflix AU, Prime Video, and SBS On Demand to see what is streaming tonight.

Giving Prosthetics and Make-up artists their flowers
Horror has driven some of the greatest practical make-up and creature work in cinema history, yet traditional star ratings never highlight it. On moviemates.social, Prosthetics / Hair & Make-up gets its own dedicated slider on every review.
Because moviemates.social is built in Melbourne for people who watch films with their mates, every tool in the app is wired to turn solo browsing into a shared experience with zero ads and zero subscription paywalls.
Why horror scores vary wildly on public databases
On IMDb or Letterboxd, a brilliant 85/100 horror film often sits at a 6.2 average because general audiences penalise the genre. Checking your Squad’s S.R.A (Squad Rating Average) shows you what your horror-loving mates actually thought.
Once the credits roll, slide the relevant crafts out of 100, compare your Squad Rating Average (S.R.A), and export a one-tap Share Card for your story or group chat.
